TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

My name is Charlie Venn, owner and barber at Lucky Sevens Barbershop in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, which opened in 2019. It is a traditional barbershop with a modern twist - a true curation of all of my passions. I have been barbering around 9 years now, and have been supported massively by my fiance Tash, who without her help I would be unable to succeed with managing my own clients, the shop, events and social media.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO MATAKKI SCISSOR

I am currently using the Talon and Assassin, the first pair I ever used 4-5 years ago was the barber 6.5

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHEIVMENT TO DATE?

Opening and running Lucky Sevens Barbershop. Ever since I started in the industry, I dreamed of opening a shop, and LSB is an exact curation of everything I wanted.

WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE?

Old school, classic styles are what I am most passionate about, and what draws the most attention, especially from other people in the industry.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN THE INDUSTRY?

I have been a barber for 9 years now, with a brief stint in ladies hairdressing prior.

HAVE YOU ACHEIVED ANY AWARDS?

I was in the final 5 for Wahl British Barber of the Year 2021 and 2022 and the final for Modern Barber Best All Round Barber in 2021 and 2022. I won Best Body of Work and Shape Control categories at the Barber Josh OP Awards 2022.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK

I’ve always been inspired by traditional barbers, to me service is everything, the art of barbering is an outstanding overall experience, not just a good haircut.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW STARTERS IN THE INDUSTRY?

Be prepared to work hard. Even now, I’m constantly working to better myself, watching haircut tutorials, taking inspiration from people online, talking tools and techniques with other barbers to take in as much knowledge as I can. After 9 years, I honestly feel like I work harder now than I did when I started!

HOW DO YOU MANAGE ADVERSITY OR FAILURE

Failure is not an option, it just means you need to find a different way of doing things. When we opened LSB in 2019, little did we know that 6 months later we would end up in a national lockdown. Instead of getting down about it, I used the time that the shop was shut to work on myself and my brand, I watched a lot of content and started to write my own education programme, enabling me to start offering 1:1 and group barber education once restrictions were lifted.
